The Greek root phil- gets its meaning from the Greek word for "love". As an example philosophy (along with the Greek root -soph, which translates to 'wisdom') is the study of human customs and the significance of life. Philias is one the most popular uses of the root "phil" due to the fact that it is associated with the love of and fascination with certain objects or topics. The suffix "philia" is used to signify an obsession or love for the subject of a particular interest. It is somewhat anaonymous to -phobia. Philias may be biological (e.g. Rhizophilia is a desire to live on roots) or even chemical (e.g. chromophilous, materials that are easily stained) or could be a pastime or an interest (e.g. Icthyophilia refers to a love for fish. Philia (TSyKHy), an Greek word meaning love, is a reference to the brotherly bond of friendship, affection and love. This is in contrast to the Greek terms Eros, or sexual/romantic love, as well as agape, or spiritual love detached. English usage differs from the etymological meanings. Many of these terms are utilized in English to refer to friendship, but not sexual attraction.
