James Alan Hetfield (born August 3 1963) is an American musician from the United States. He is the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, co-founder and a main songwriter of heavy metal band Metallica. The band is known for his intricate rhythm guitar playing but he also occasionally performs solos and lead guitar on stage and in the studio. After responding to an advertisement in The Recycler in Los Angeles, Lars Ulrich asked Hetfield to be a co-founder of Metallica. Metallica has been awarded nine Grammy Awards and released ten studio albums including three live albums, four extended plays, and 24 singles.In 2009, Hetfield was ranked at No. Joel McIver's book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists puts Hetfield in the top spot at the No. 8. Hit Parader placed him at the No. 8 in Joel McIver's book of the 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists and at the number. 24 in Hit Parader's list of the 100 Greatest Metal Vocalists. Rolling Stone ranked him as the 87th most influential guitar player of all time.
