International Women's Day (IWD) is a world-wide holiday observed each year on March 8 to be an important event in the women's rights movement that draws attention to issues such as gender equality as well as reproductive rights and violence and abuse against women.Spurred on by the universal feminist movement for women's rights that began in New Zealand, IWD originated from labor-related movements across North America and Europe during the first half of the 20th century. According to some sources the first IWD was a "Women's Day" that was organized by the New York's Socialist Party of America on February 28th, 1909. German representatives to the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference suggested that "a particular Women's Day be held annually" [8The first international commemorations of International Women's Day were held the year after. Women were granted suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917 (the beginning of the February Revolution), IWD was declared an official holiday in the month of March 8th; [unreliable source?]
