Lamar was paid $14 million by the Lakers in his most successful season. Growing up, Odom was a difficult child. At the age of 12, his mother died of colon cancer. His father was addicted to heroin. His mother Mildred raised him. Odom was a great basketball player at three of his high schools: Redemption Christian Academy, Christ The King Regional High School and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. In 1997, Odom was named the Parade Player of the Year, USA Today All-USC First Team, as well as Parada All-American First Team. Odom was contemplating making the NBA after he graduated from high school but came to the conclusion that he was not ready. Odom was awarded a scholarship by the University of Nevada Las Vegas. In response to questions about his ACT score however, the college removed the scholarship.
